Assistant Professor of African American Literature and Culture

Description
The English Department at Stony Brook University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of English specializing in African American literature and culture. We are looking for applicants with strong research programs focusing on any aspect of Black literary, cultural, or media studies in any time-period. All approaches are welcome, but we especially welcome work with a strong theoretical and critical lens; intermedial work; and work drawing on intersectional approaches to race, class, gender, and sexuality. The ideal candidate will be able to teach graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses on topics of their own devising as well as introductory undergraduate courses on African American literature and culture, including its Black diasporic connections.
The position will remain open until filled, with priority consideration for applications submitted by October 15.
Qualifications
Required qualifications:
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in English, in African American Studies, or a closely related field, with extensive training in African American literature and culture. Evidence of ability to conduct and publish high-level scholarly research in any area of African American studies. Ability to teach a range of courses in African American literature and culture. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.
Preferred qualifications:
Record of peer-reviewed publication. Post-secondary teaching experience related to African American studies. Evidence of outreach and engagement with off-campus communities. Experience with relevant professional organizations. Demonstrated interest in securing external research funding in relevant areas.
